Cost of Web 2.0 Spam in Australia

Research Area: Spam 2.0
Status: In progress

Proposed start date: 2009-08-13 Proposed end date: 2010-12-04
Description:

The aim of this project is to model the cost of Web 2.0 Spam to the Australian economy. This will be measured in terms of loss of GDP, loss in employee or user productivity etc. This will be the first study that looks at the cost incurred due to Web Spam i.e. blogs spam, forum spam, wiki spam etc. since most of the existing studies are focused on email spam.

This research is of prime significance because currently the amount or size of Web 2.0 Spam is not known, also the associated cost of Web 2.0 Spam is also not clear. This research will attempt to add insights in this direction.

The research team has taken a unique approach to estimate the cost of Web 2.0 Spam. We will not be using a survey based approach to predict the cost of spam, which is what is done in many previous studies in email spam cost. We are using intelligent data mining and web usage mining techniques to detect spam and then use econometric models to derive the associated cost of spam. The process of estimating cost is completely automated once the Cost Estimator system would be deployed online.
